Shouldn't I get the ebook of this course for free?
Developing and maintaining a book, ebook and video course like Kicad Like a Pro is a huge effort that involves several people. It has taken us over six months of dedicated effort to produce, not to mention the thousands of hours of working with KiCad, communicating with students, and learning from the first KiCad Like a Pro course that has accumulated to this second edition. In addition, we are committed to support for years to come. Without the earnings from the sales of the products that came from this effort, it is not possible to fulfil our mission.
Isn't KiCad free? Shouldn't this course be free?
KiCad is Open Source and free to use software. Although this is not obvious to many people, KiCad costs a lot of money to develop. KiCad development perhaps costs as much as its commercial competitors. Two of the main differences between KiCad, and a competitor like, say, Altium are: 1. KiCad's source code is available for download by anyone (Open Source). Altium's source code is not available for download (Closed Source). 2. KiCad's development costs are covered by donations instead of its users (although users may donate, if they wish). Altiums development costs are covered by its user's licencing payments. We developed KiCad Like a Pro for the benefit of KiCad users using the "user pays" model. This model is the most commonly used in a free-market economy. Our only source of income is our students. Unlike other organisations, we would not be able to produce our courses without our students. For this reason, we believe that the "user pays" model is the most appropriate. It allows us to align our mission (which is to produce the best technology education content to benefit the most people possible) with ensuring that we produce products that our students want (if they don't want our products, they will not buy). Therefore, we believe that KiCad's free-to-use feature does not require that this course is also free in any moral or legal sense.
What version of KiCad does this course cover?
This course is recorded on KiCad 5, installed in Ubuntu Linux 18.04. However, KiCad 5 looks and operates almost identically in all major operating system, including Mac OS and Windows.
I am a student of KiCad Like a Pro, 1st edition. Can I upgrade to 2nd edition free of charge?
KiCad Like a Pro 2nd edition is a complete new course, and therefore you will need to purchase it if you want to enrol. Here's an analogy: Apple will not give you a free new iPhone 10 if you already own an older iPhone.
What kind of support is there for students of this course?
